Cruising the Danube, May 2006

After years of thinking about travelling together, Gene and Linda Smith and we fulfilled that wish in May 2006. Our Danube River cruise, on Avalon Waterway's MS Poetry, bookended by time in Budapest and Prague, revealed some key themes to us: 1) the scope and impact of the Austro-Hungarian Empire/Hapsburg dynasty; 2) life under the Communist influence, and changes since the fall of Communism in 1989; and 3) Antisemitism and other kinds of bigotry have been a part of this world and still exist there.

Of course, besides all the geopolitical learning and meditation, we made some wonderful new friends, saw some great natural and man-made beauty, and had some fabulous meals. Follow the links below for a taste of Eastern Europe!
